City of Onkaparinga Case Study
JD Edwards upgrade, delivered in 88 days provided productivity increases and positioned this local government to evolve in the future.
The City of Onkaparinga worked with Oracle partner, Myriad IT, to upgrade to JD Edwards EnterpriseOne 9.1.2. Using the 100 Day Upgrade framework, Myriad IT was able to deliver the project in a total of 88 days. The client was able to meet timelines critical to other projects, reduce support costs and enhance the user experience.
“The ability to customise the visual interface, enhanced queries and improved grid functionality has improved operational efficiency and freed up IT resources to focus on strategic projects.”

A baseline ESU was required to update JD Edwards EnterpriseOne 8.12 to support payroll. Implementation of this patch would have required extensive testing by all users across a range of business critical roles. The need for extended support for mature JD Edwards software had also led to significantly increased support costs.
Strategic change within the organisation was driving an urgent need for further integration of JD Edwards into other systems and a hardware upgrade.
Myriad IT has worked with the City of Onkaparinga for a number of years. As one of only two Oracle partners in Australia qualified to deliver the 100 Day Upgrade program, it was a logical choice.
The JD Edwards 100 Day Upgrade Solution implemented by Myriad IT provided the City of Onkaparinga with:
Enhanced user experience and productivity. Users have reported an enhanced experience. Greater flexibility and an intuitive interface has facilitated more efficient data entry and reporting.
Reduced support costs. Upgrading JD Edwards means that extended support is no longer required, realising support cost savings of approximately 15%.
Compliance. The upgrade has enabled tax and regulatory fixes to be implemented.
JD Edwards 100 Day Upgrade
Using the 100 Day Upgrade framework, Myriad IT was able to deliver the upgrade from JD Edwards EnterpriseOne 8.12 to 9.1.2 in a total of 88 days enabling the client to meet timelines critical to other projects.
The City of Onkaparinga’s 30 JD Edwards users fulfil critical roles within the organisation including finance, accounts payable, asset and fleet management, procurement, payroll and human resources.
The upgrade has enabled tax and regulatory fixes to be implemented whilst enhancing the user experience and productivity. From the Payroll Team’s perspective, this was achieved with the same amount of user input and time as would have been required to apply the baseline ESU to the old software.
Staged approach minimised disruption
To accommodate strategic change at the City of Onkaparinga, Myriad IT took a staged approach to the project.
To ensure the project remained focused on JD Edwards upgrade, Myriad IT initially determined which complementary systems needed upgrading prior to starting the project. Data was archived and purged before the upgrade to reduce downtime associated with go-live.
Myriad IT then installed and configured an upgrade development/test system to facilitate fast implementation. Once testing and training were completed, the upgrade was moved to the production system and the project went live, with minimal downtime or interruption to day-to-day activity.
“Myriad IT has provided the City of Onkaparinga with quality consulting and support services for a number of years. We had a very tight timeline for the final production phase of project delivery which Myriad IT was able to accommodate without any fuss. We were delighted with how the consultant managed the project. The consultant was accessible, responsive, kept us well informed throughout the process and made every effort to ensure a smooth transition.”

Reduced support costs
Upgrading JD Edwards has meant that the City of Onkaparinga no longer requires extended Oracle support. This has enabled support cost savings of approximately 15% to be achieved. IT resources are now able to focus on supporting business initiatives such as strategic projects instead of providing JD Edwards technical support.
Whilst undertaking the upgrade program, Myriad IT’s consultants worked with the City of Onkaparinga to reduce hardware footprint by replacing physical servers with virtual machines and de-commission older hardware with minimal disruption. In addition, migration to Oracle Weblogic Server 11g for the web tier has improved stability, performance and manageability.
The City of Onkaparinga now has a modern user interface with multiple browser support which offers greater flexibility from an end user and standard operating environment perspective.
The upgrade has positioned the City of Onkaparinga to evolve in the future. It now has a clear support framework, can implement Oracle companion products when required and will receive ongoing regulatory and tax fixes under their support agreement.
